How to choose the wood for a custom furniture piece
A practical guide to choosing between solid wood, veneered MDF and melamine based on the use, budget and style of your custom furniture.

Choosing the right material is one of the decisions that most affects the final result and cost of a custom furniture piece. Here we explain the practical differences between the most common options.
Step 1: define how the piece will be used
A low-use decorative piece is not the same as one that sees intense daily use, like a kitchen or a closet. The level of use determines how durable the material needs to be.
Step 2: compare the material options
Solid wood
Offers the best natural look and durability, but is the most expensive option. It’s most often used in visible details (doors, frames, legs) rather than the entire body of the piece.
Veneered MDF
A medium-density board covered with a layer of natural wood or laminate. A good balance between appearance, cost and dimensional stability.
Melamine
A board covered with a decorative layer resistant to scratches and stains. It’s the most affordable option and comes in a wide variety of colors and textures.
What about humid environments?
For bathrooms and kitchens, it’s best to prioritize moisture-resistant materials and sealants, regardless of which base material you choose.
Step 3: consider your available budget
A common combination is using melamine or MDF for the body of the piece and reserving solid wood for visible details, striking a good balance between appearance and cost.
Step 4: talk to your carpenter
Every project has specifics (humidity, use, budget) worth reviewing before deciding on the final material.
